SIDS

SIDS or sudden infant death syndrome. Is when a baby suddenly dies in their sleep.  Babies typically die due to their breathing, and usually is healthy before death.  Even tho SIDS rates has decreased in the United States , thousands of babies are still dying in the US.  I chose this topic because I have a premature son.  My biggest fear is SIDS.  Premature babies has a higher risk for SIDS, because of their low weight.  I take all the precautions to lower his risk for SIDS.  Precautions such as putting him to sleep on his back, keeping him away from smoke, and keeping a clutter free crib.  Japan has a lower rate of sudden infant death syndrome.  This decrease is believe to be due to having fewer sheets on the bed, low room temperature, and mothers not smoking or drinking during pregnancy.

  1. Hello Waukesha,
I remember when I first heard at SIDs I felt really sick because of babies dying helpless in their sleep and being healthy and they still die. This is a disease that I wish they could find more research and studies on. It doesn't seems fair to the child their life leaves them so suddenly and do not even have a fair chance at life. It hard to believe that babies that die from sudden infant death is healthy and die anyways all of a sudden. SIDs has always been my biggest fear and it still is today. That why mothers should be extra careful with monitoring their babies.

  2. It has been a challenge to educate our parents in our infant room about the new Minimum Standards regarding infants' cribs and the requirements for infants' sleeping routines. Some parents do not like the fact that in Texas, we can not have any type of blanket, toy, top sheet, stuffed animal, etc. in the cribs with the baby. They worry that the baby is cold. I completely understand. It is a difficult Minimum Standard. The intent behind the standard is to prevent SIDS, and I admire that goal. It is just difficult to keep up with accurate research because it seems to change continually.

  3. HI Waukesha,

My youngest was born 5 weeks early and weighed 3.15 lbs. I was scared about SIDS as well, but really for both of my children. I hope that one day researchers can find out the cause of SIDs because it has to be more to it. Thank you for sharing!
